Range-Doppler Refocusing: A Power–Memory Trade-off
A short engineering review of range-Doppler retrospective transmit focusing, separating CPU power, peak memory and complete-scanner energy in an OEM evaluation.
By ALEVA | California, USA
Can an ultrasound OEM reduce the workload of retrospective transmit focusing without simply choosing a larger processor?
The method
Jakovljevic and colleagues (2026) adapt range-Doppler processing to retrospective transmit beamforming for focused and diverging transmissions, evaluating simulations, phantoms and in vivo acquisitions.
The underlying ultrasound range-Doppler approach is not new: an earlier adaptation was published in 2022. The newer study examines a particular transmit-refocusing application and its implementation trade-offs.
The trade-off
Against the tested alternatives, the method uses less CPU power than optimized delay-and-sum, but more than F-k migration, while requiring less memory than F-k. CPU power is not whole-scanner energy consumption.
Our proposed OEM evaluation
Replay the same acquired data through each candidate, matching the reconstruction grid and transmit conditions. Agree image-acceptance criteria first. Check target location, axial and lateral profiles, sidelobes and background artifacts—not just an attractive crop.
Then record peak memory, end-to-end latency and energy per completed frame on the intended hardware, with warm-up and thermal conditions documented. Reject comparisons that change both the algorithm and the workload.
Bottom line: compare the processing domain, memory budget and image evidence together. These are proposed engineering checks, not measured ALEVA results, clinical validation or a commercial implementation claim.
